On Our Way to Ireland 2006

We left St. Louis on July 19, 2006 on one of our 100 degree days.  Little did we know a bad storm would blow in shortly after we left which even blew part of the airport away and left thousands without power for a week.

What we did know was our flight was delayed.  We were supposed to leave at 4:30 for Boston where we had an hour and a half hour layover.  But the flight arrived 40 minutes late because La Guardia had a power outage.  After the plane arrived, maintenance needed to fix a seat.  Then the plane wasn't getting air conditioning.

We didn't leave until 5:30 PM and knew even with them holding the flight, it was going to be tight so I requested a wheel chair for Dave.  I ran for the gate with our carry-ons, but they were still boarding a huge group of 5th-6th graders in the People to People program.  We  took off around 9:30.

We got a new seat assignment in First Class---but the seat was too big for me and in the bulk head so I had nothing to put my feet on.  It was a sleepless night.

We arrived at Shannon, Ireland 8:00 AM---our suitcases did not.  Seven golfers from Bellerive Country Club arrived with no clubs.  Dave filled out the missing luggage report while I went to find the Elderhostel people.  Then, I couldn't get back in.  Finally, I had Dave paged and he joined our group.

At 10 AM we had a buffet breakfast at Woodlands and drove through Adare with thatched roofs.  I fell asleep on the bus and didn't see much.  We arrived at International Hotel in Killarney around 12:45 so our rooms weren't ready.  Dave and I walked around town and had lunch.

After our room was ready, we showered, took another walk and had a meeting with the leaders where we were given a packet of information.

We had salmon for dinner, veggies, salad and rolls.  For dessert, I had fruit but Dave had rhubarb cobbler.

Between Two Worlds

Most of my life, I've considered it fortunate that I was just ahead of the Baby-boom. Generally, the Baby-boomers were born between 1946 and 1964 after the fathers returned from World War II. It was a huge population explosion that has reverberated through American society.

This blog will be part history, part memories, part reflections of a retired teacher, but active "Senior". I have always felt like I straddled two generations forming a bridge. Sometimes I think like a baby-boomer, but sometimes I'm locked into my parents' Depression era thinking. I'm a dichotomy of two eras. But, I'm always ready to try something new---so here I am dipping my toes in the water of Blogworld.
