Deacons Recycle Electronics

The Deacons at our church sponsored an electronic recycle drive last Saturday. Click here to see what all the Deacons do. If you scroll down that page you'll see that we sponsor the ABC Sale---a church-wide rummage sale.

Last year we had so many television and computer donations that we had to pay to have them hauled off. This year with the change to digital television, we were afraid we'd be swamped with obsolete TVs. So, we looked into various ways of disposing of televisions and discovered that our local trash hauler threw them in the landfills. Being Christians who believe part of our Covenant with God is to protect the environment, we didn't see that as an option either.

We couldn't afford to have them hauled away, but we couldn't afford to put them in a landfill either. We put Clarice in charge. She'd been to a seminar sponsored by Presbyterians For Restoring Creation. She found an organization, WITS, which refurbishes electronics and what can't be refurbished is broken down, recycled or disposed of properly.

We took donations for televisions and computer monitors (which we had to pay for individually in addition to the price of the truck). Because people were generous with their donations, we only had to pay $145 for an entire truck-load of equipment. Perhaps next year, we can have it at the same time as the rummage sale.

We had several deacons on hand to help unload cars in addition to the workers who came with the truck. They will send us tax receipts for our donations.
This is not an optical illusion---someone brought in a big screen TV---about 3 times the size as the one I have! And, it works!

Meanwhile, Dave and I got rid of 1 Classic Mac, 1 Mac laptop (around 12 years old!), 1 Power Mac (it was more PC friendly than other Macs), a printer, batteries, a wash machine motor, several telephones. Don't worry, girls, we still have the Commodore 64---it was too heavy for me to get off the shelf!

Between Two Worlds

Most of my life, I've considered it fortunate that I was just ahead of the Baby-boom. Generally, the Baby-boomers were born between 1946 and 1964 after the fathers returned from World War II. It was a huge population explosion that has reverberated through American society.

This blog will be part history, part memories, part reflections of a retired teacher, but active "Senior". I have always felt like I straddled two generations forming a bridge. Sometimes I think like a baby-boomer, but sometimes I'm locked into my parents' Depression era thinking. I'm a dichotomy of two eras. But, I'm always ready to try something new---so here I am dipping my toes in the water of Blogworld.
